Llama Walks FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Llama Walks, Ranch Visits & School Visits

WHAT KIND OF PERSON VISITS SHANGRILLAMA?

Our customers are insatiably curious about animals, have an adventurous spirit, and are bursting with enthusiasm about the opportunity to learn about llamas.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LLAMA WALK AND A LLAMA LLESSON?

Llama Walks — enable you to spend 2.5 hours accompanying a pack of llamas on a trail walk. You will take turns walking all five llamas and learn just how different one llama is from another. Halfway through your adventure, Mama Llama will teach you about the animals from head to toe.

Llama Llessons — are one-hour ranch visits at ShangriLlama in our fully enclosed barn. Mama Llama will guide you through 30 questions about llamas in increasing difficulty, designed for the education and amusement of people of all ages. Participants work together to answer the questions, aided by a wide variety of props, audio-visual info and, of course, live llamas!

IS IT TRUE THAT YOU’RE FROM CALIFORNIA?

Yes! ShangriLlama hosted Llama Walks for seven years in southern California, earning a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor and being sold out almost every weekend! ShangriLlama was also a media darling in SoCal, having been featured on numerous network news shows, and even securing a comedy show with Starz Digital featuring one of our llamas! (Please see our News section for details.) ShangriLlama relocated to Parker, Texas, in October 2014 and is thrilled to be offering Llama Walks in this great state!

WHERE IS SHANGRILLAMA LOCATED?

ShangriLlama is a private llama ranch located in Parker, Texas, just three miles from Southfork Ranch, two miles from the east Plano border, and just 30 minutes from downtown Dallas. Reservations are required for Llama Walks, ranch visits and school visits. Thank you for understanding that for the health and safety of our llamas, WE MUST KEEP OUR ADDRESS PRIVATE UNTIL A LLAMA WALK OR RANCH VISIT IS SCHEDULED.

WILL YOU BRING THE LLAMAS TO ME?

ShangriLlama can’t bring its llamas to private homes, because there are so many plants that are poisonous to llamas. But we do offer free school visits in conjunction with our llama book fundraiser. Please see our Ranch & School Visits page for more info.

WHAT IF I HAVE TO CANCEL OR CHANGE MY RESERVATION?

We are happy to change your reservation or provide a full refund when you allow us 48-hours’ notice, so that we have time to reach people on our waiting list.

WHAT IF IT RAINS?

If heavy rains are forecast for the date of your reservation, we will reschedule you for the next available Llama Walk that you are able to participate in.

WHICH FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?

We are able to accept most forms of payment through our online reservation service.

Questions about Llama Walks

WHEN DO YOU OFFER LLAMA WALKS?

Llama Walks take place on Saturdays and Sundays and last approximately 2.5 hours. During the cooler months, Llama Walks start at 11:00 a.m. on Saturdays and at 2:00 p.m. on Sundays. During the hotter months, we host Llama Walks at 8:00 a.m. on Saturdays AND Sundays. If it’s raining, too humid or ridiculously hot, neither you nor the llamas would want to take a walk! Come for a Llama Llesson instead in our fully enclosed barn.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A LLAMA WALK?

Llama Walks are available by reservation. Just click the Book Now button at the top of this page.

WHICH LLAMA WILL I WALK?

You will walk ALL the llamas during your Llama Walk by rotating with the other guests along the trail.

HOW MUCH DOES A LLAMA WALK COST?

The cost for this unique animal adventure is $50 per person. Please see our News section for a video sample of a Llama Walk.

WILL YOU TAKE PRIVATE GROUPS ON A LLAMA WALK?

Yes! There is no extra charge to book a group of 10 to 20 people for a private Llama Walk. The total cost is $500, which you can divide evenly among your participants. Each person can pay separately, if you’d like, using our online reservation service, which you can access by clicking Book Now at the top of the page. You can also use the Book Now button to check our online calendar to select your group’s date.

IS THERE AN AGE LIMIT TO ATTEND A LLAMA WALK?

Our insurance company doesn’t allow us to bring children younger than eight years old on the trail, and older minors must share a llama with a parent, guardian or friend. All participants do share a llama to safeguard the animal from eating plants off the trail.

ARE LLAMA WALKS OFFERED TO SENIOR CITIZENS?

Seniors with the following physical abilities are quite welcome to participate in a Llama Walk:

  • You can walk for three hours unassisted.
  • You can jog for short intervals, if a llama picks up his stride.
  • You can use one hand to hold the animal’s lead, while keeping your other hand available to slow the llama, if necessary.
  • You can protect the llama from eating anything off the trail. He could die simply by eating a poisonous leaf!

Questions about Ranch Visits / Llama Llessons

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A RANCH VISIT?

ShangriLlama opens its gates once per week to teach about the llamas in their home environment. We call these encounters Llama Llessons. These one-hour, interactive, educational sessions enable you to learn about the animals through observation and collaboration with other guests. Llama Llessons take place on Saturdays at noon. Llama Llessons are designed for people of any age, whether attending alone, as a couple, or with young children accompanied by an adult. Please visit groupon.com to purchase your tickets.

DO YOU OFFER PRIVATE LLAMA LLESSONS?

Yes! Groups of 15 to 30 people are welcome to schedule private Llama Llessons any day of the week. Contact llama@ShangriLlama.com with your proposed date and time, and Mama Llama will reply with your discount code. The cost for private Llama Llessons is $10 per person. Please consider selecting a regularly scheduled Llama Llesson from our online calendar (click “Book Now“) instead of a private llesson, so you can take advantage of the Groupon discount.

Questions about School Visits

TELL ME WHAT A SCHOOL VISIT IS LIKE!

If you invite ShangriLlama to visit your school, the entire llama pack will entertain the students (and teachers!) with an engaging program. Grade level by grade level, children will enjoy gathering around the llamas’ portable corral to help each other answer age-appropriate questions by observing the llamas. Smiles, laughs and learning are guaranteed! There is no fee for a school visit; instead, we help to coordinate a llama book fundraiser, providing your school a 20-percent profit for each book sold. Please see our Llama Gifts page for info about our children’s book.
